reliable estimate of the value of private property and cargo lost in sunken ships, lighters and cargo-boats or damaged in collapsed Godowns and houses or by the water that swept over the sea-walls and into the lower floors of stores. $4,000,000 seems from sums I have heard mentioned to be an outside figure and only a small part of this loss will fall on the Colony, most of the goods having been insured or re-insured in companies outside of it.
Damage to Civil Government Buildings and Public Works.)
23. Nearly every Government Building suffered more or less, but with the exception of Sham Shui Po Police Station, to the North-West of the Kowloon Peninsula, which will practically have to be rebuilt, the damages reported are not serious. In Victoria, a large part of the lead roof covering of Queen's College was carried away and a portion of the roof of one of the blocks of the Government Civil Hospital was stripped of its tiles. At Kennedy Town Plague Hospital, some of the Matsheds were demolished and the others were all badly damaged. At the Cattle Depot in the same district, the floor of one of the recently constructed sheds subsided considerably. On the Peak, four one-quarter inch plate glass windows were smashed at Mountain Lodge. A Matshed for Indian Constables at Stanley
